Jagan rise worries rivals as Prasanna retains Kovur(timesofindia)

It is a clear message to the ruling Congress and main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) that Jaganmohan Reddy is here to stay and could emerge as a key player in the 2014 general elections. Those who had dubbed his triumph in last year's Kadapa byelections as a sympathy vote for YSR family would now have to sit up and take notice of the Kovur verdict where his nominee Prasanna Kumar Reddy trounced high-profile TDP and Congress candidates.
Prasanna defeated his brother-in-law and TDP veteran Somireddi Chandramohan Reddy by a margin of 23,496 votes. Congress nominee Polamreddi Srinivasula Reddy was relegated to third spot. By snatching a seat from TDP and pushing Congress to third, Jagan has made his intentions clear vis-a-vis the 2014 general elections. But before that, Jagan has a big role to play in the bypolls necessitated by the resignation of 17 loyalists MLAs from the Assembly.
The Kovur byelection was the first electoral battle outside his Kadapa stronghold ever since Jagan parted ways with the Congress. The Congress and TDP both took the election as a matter of prestige with a single-point agenda of humiliating Jagan. Unlike Kadapa, Kovur cannot be said to be a Reddy stronghold which is why Jagan's political rivals have much to worry about.
"The Kovur win proves that Congress can ill afford to ignore Jagan," said a senior analyst. The seat was originally held by TDP's Prasanna, who quit the Assembly to join Jagan's party.
While Chandrababu Naidu vigorously toured the constituency, party bigwigs like Kiran Kumar Reddy, Botsa Satyanarayana, Chiranjeevi and V Hanumantha Rao campaigned for the Congress candidate.
Prasanna polled 73,876 votes and Chandramohan Reddy secured 50,380 votes leaving Srinivasula Reddy with 41,307 votes. Interestingly, TDP got 73,212 votes and Congress 65,768 votes in the last general elections. Prasanna had won that contest by a slim margin of 8,000 votes.
In what is a clear indication that Jagan's party split the vote and made gains off its rivals, TDP and Congress lost 23,000 and 15,000 votes, respectively, to YSR Congress. Also, Jagan's party carved out a new vote base of about 36,000 votes in Kovur. The YSR Congress secured nearly 42.06% of the total 1,75,603 votes polled. Chandrababu Naidu's party managed just about 28% of the votes while 23.48% ballots were cast in favour of Congress.

Bypoll results worry Congress

An intense debate is on amongst members of the ruling Congress, including ministers, on the party's prospects in the byelections that have just been concluded (for seven seats) and those that have to be held by the end of August (for 18 seats). Some serving and some former ministers took part in the debate held in the Assembly lobbies on Monday.
Reliable sources told this correspondent that the party leaders, after scanning through various survey reports, believe that the Congress may not win a single seat in the just concluded seven byelections. They are believed to have also taken into account the report of the survey organised by Vijayawada MP Lagadap-ati Rajagopal, that predicted massive wins for the TRS in the six seats in Telangana and for the YSR Congress in Kovur.
Another survey organised by a popular local TV channel engaged by AICC on the fate of forthcoming bypolls is also very clear that the YSR Congress will be able to retain a majority of the seats, with perhaps one or two seats going to the TD.
“There is no planning in the party on how to go about in the elections, it is quite evident that there is no coordination among the key functionaries in taking decisions, if the same situation continues, the Congress will have to face a debacle in polls,” the leaders opined. “Today it is seven segments, tomorrow it will be 17 seats, if we lose all the seats won by us in the 2009 elections, what will be the future of party in 2014,” a senior minister is said to have expressed.
At the same time, the Congress leaders are also not willing to demand a change in the state leadership, as they believe that this will lead to total anarchy in the party as there is no leader who is acceptable to all the three regions of the state. “The party's central leadership should step in and take corrective measures and ensure a change in the functioning of both the Chief Minister and the PCC chief,” another minister reportedly pointed out.

Jagan puts his popularity at stake in Kovur(Article from greatandhra)

YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy seems to be testing his own popularity among the voters of Kovur constituency in the by-elections, polling for which is being held on Sunday.
Contrary to the assumptions and allegations that YSR Congress party would pump in huge money in the Kovur by-elections, there was surprisingly no such attempt by the party. There was a talk that Jagan would dump money bags in the eleventh hour and distribute at least Rs 5,000 per vote among the people, but surprisingly it did not happen.
While the Congress and Telugu Desam Party candidates distributed huge amount among the voters, as high as Rs 2,000 per vote, YSR Congress party candidate Nallapureddy Prasanna Kumar Reddy refrained from money distribution in a big way, except for about Rs 200 per head among the party sympathizers towards election expenses in the last minute.
Apparently, Jagan is learnt to have advised Prasanna not to distribute any money because he wants to test the real love of the people towards him and his party.
“It is definitely a calculated risk. He wants to know whether his popularity among the people is genuine or whether the voters would succumb only to money power. He does not mind even if the verdict goes otherwise, but it will give him an opportunity to rework his strategies,” a political observer remarked.
