Sympathy for Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy wasn't the sole factor for his party's resounding by-election victory since he had already consolidated his hold among the masses and received acceptance as one of their own, according to wife Y.S. Bharati.
The brainstorming campaign by Jagan's mother Y.S. Vijayamma and sister Sharmila also impacted the final outcome significantly. They successfully conveyed to people that grave injustice had been done to him, Ms. Bharati said in an interview here on Saturday, a day after the party won 15 Assembly seats and the Nellore Lok Sabha constituency.
She echoed her party's view that the Congress and TDP had ganged up to defeat the YSR Congress. They had left a trail of evidence in the form of TDP polling abnormally low number of votes in Ramachandrapuram and Narsapuram to facilitate the Congress' victory.
This unholy nexus exposed the gaping leadership vacuum created by YSR's death. It was also the reason why people are gravitating towards Jagan. “Both Congress and the Opposition are not doing what they should. The Opposition, instead of criticising the government, is targeting my husband. Our victory would not have been so outstanding had they done their jobs. Even two-and-a-half years after my father-in-law's death, they speak ill of YSR and Jagan,” she said.
Chandrababu Naidu had done nothing to champion issues such as fee reimbursement for backward class students, inflation and hike in petrol prices. Jagan was alone in his fight on these issues. Morally, the YSR Congress had emerged as the real opposition even though it had just 17 MLAs.
Ms. Bharati defended her in-laws for raising a controversy over YSR's death in the helicopter crash. Ms. Vijayamma was convinced from Day One that something was amiss in the events leading to the fatal accident. Her mother-in-law also felt strongly that the same conspirators were responsible for her son's incarceration.
She said that with Jagan in prison, the YSR Congress Party's victory did not feel good. “It was his day out. He should have been there.” Yet, the party had to cheer over the verdict for having sent out a loud and clear message that the people accepted Jagan as one of their own -- a brother, son or a grandson.
A management graduate who schooled in Bishop's Cotton, Bangalore, Ms. Bharati appeared at ease in fielding questions, political as well as business, the latter in her capacity as chairperson of Jagathi Publications and Indira Television.
She said she did not campaign in the by-elections to make herself available to handle legal issues and look after business. “I have no plans to take active part in politics. I am talking to you to explain Jagan's side of the story.”
“My husband was a nobody between 2004 and 2009 when the (26) GOs were issued. He was not an MP, MLA or an officer. When it was pointed out that it was “behind the curtains activity” that was being questioned, she asked, “If the Cabinet decisions were right, where is the question of quid pro quo? Why will anybody pay a bribe if the decisions were right?”
Denying that ill-gotten money was invested in Sakshi daily, she said the share certificates were despatched to investors through registered post. Since these investments were not shady, the share certificates were in the investors' possession. “Jagan worked extremely hard to see the success ofSakshi and it hurts me when wild allegations are levelled,” she said.
