HIGHER EDUCATION IS POOR MAN’S RIGHT: VIJAYAMMA

YSR Congress party honorary president Mrs. YS Vijayamma said that YS Rajasekhara Reddy had implemented the fee reimbursement scheme for all eligible professional students as he thought higher education is also a right of the poor and downtrodden.
Launching her two-day Fee Deeksha at Indira Park in here on Thursday, Sept 6, demanding total fee reimbursement for all eligible students of BC, Minority, EBC and physically challenged categories, she said the linking of the scheme to several conditions has caused much distress to the students.

She found fault with the government for treating the fee reimbursement scheme as a heavy burden on the state exchequer. She reminded that Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy implemented the fee reimbursement scheme totally for eligible students without any pre-conditions for all the years when he was chief minister.

Vijayamma stated that the present government thinking that poor people are not eligible for higher education and demanded the implementation of total fee reimbursement in its original form as implemented by YSR.

“The government is not spending the money from its coffers. It gets revenue in the form of taxes collected from the people and that is meant for welfare programmes only,” she observed.

She questioned the government as to how the poor can pay the mounting fee. Vijayamma emphasized that YSR had introduced the scheme as the poor and downtrodden were not in a position to pay the fee for their higher studies.

The government can’t create hurdles in the pursuit of educational career of poor people,” she said, adding, that the Government’s action amounted to curtailing the growth of society at large.
